Design and build
The NW1 uses the same optical platform as the NL1: a 140 mm F/2.0 super-fast, multi-coated, all-glass objective feeding a single Gen 2+ image intensifier tube, with an image beam splitter delivering a two-eyed image. The large, fast lens keeps the magnified 5x view bright, and automatic brightness control plus a bright-light cutoff protect the tube. The diopter adjusts from -4 to +2.
As with the green model, the Foxbat-5 is designed to be tripod-mounted to steady the magnified image, and a tripod is included. Two AA cells run it for up to roughly 40 hours; the detachable long-range 850 nm IR illuminator lights distant subjects in total darkness; and the water- and fog-resistant housing handles damp outdoor nights.
Why white phosphor for long observation
The NW1 tube is a Gen 2+ white-phosphor (P45) unit at AGM’s Level 1 grade, the cleanest the company offers in this class. White phosphor renders the scene in greyscale rather than green, which tends to reveal the shape and texture of the outline of an animal or a break in distant cover more readily and reduces the eye fatigue that builds over a long watch. On a device built specifically for sustained observation, that comfort advantage is felt more than on a quick-use 1x unit.
Like the NL1, this is a bi-ocular: one tube shared by both eyes, so the image is comfortable but flat. At the observation distances this device is built for, depth perception is not the goal reached; brightness and a restful image are.
